History
The Melbourne Basketball Association (MBA) has a proud history dating back to 1931, when it was one of four founding associations of the Victorian Basketball Association (VBA), alongside the YMCA, Presbyterian and Army associations.
A pivotal figure in the early development of the MBA and basketball in Victoria was Ken Watson. As MBA Secretary, Watson went on to become Secretary of the VBA and Australia’s first Olympic basketball coach at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. His leadership helped shape the growth of basketball across the state, while his work with the MBA was instrumental in the development of the Melbourne Tigers.
Under Watson’s guidance, the Melbourne Tigers became pioneers of international competition, competing against USA college teams and European clubs. He also played an important role in developing a strong club-based structure for Australian basketball, helping establish a foundation for the continued growth of clubs across Victoria and the country.
The Melbourne Tigers men were dominant in the original South Eastern Conference, winning every season from 1966 to 1971. When the competition evolved into the National Invitation Basketball League (NBL), the Tigers eventually gained entry and established themselves among Australia’s leading basketball clubs, winning their first NBL Championship in 1993.
Ken Watson’s successor, Lindsay Gaze, would go on to play an equally significant role in shaping the future of the MBA and Victorian basketball. Taking over the administration of the association from Ken, Lindsay brought his remarkable knowledge, leadership and passion for the game to the MBA, helping guide the association through an important period of growth and development.
The legacy established by Ken and continued by Lindsay remains an important part of the association’s identity today. Through the Melbourne Central Basketball Association (MCBA), the MBA’s traditions continue through senior domestic competition and the ongoing support and endorsement of the Melbourne Tigers, ensuring a rich and proud history continues to shape the future of basketball in Melbourne.
Competitions
Join one of Melbourne’s longest-running basketball competitions at MSAC dating back to 1931. MBA Monday Night Competition has a proud history of bringing together teams of all skill levels for competitive, social, and enjoyable basketball.
Adult men’s competitions run Monday nights across 10 courts, with grades A–J and games scheduled from 5:50pm to 10:00pm.

Games are played at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). Occasional games may be held offsite due to venue availability.
