Over the Australia Day long weekend, 17 MCBA referees made the trip to Bendigo to officiate at the Bendigo Junior Classic, gaining valuable experience across a high-quality junior tournament environment.
The group included a mix of developing and experienced referees, with many taking the leap into their very first tournament setting. Across the weekend, officials were challenged on court, supported through feedback, and given the opportunity to connect with referees from across the state.
Representing MCBA in Bendigo were:
Lachlan Geron, Declan Hamilton, Tess Juler, Liliana Hamilton, Shelby Santospirito, Thea Huynh, Tijana Huynh, Mimi Clayton, Grace Wypych, Archie Robinson, Damla Erdem, Bas Webster, Christian Ditchburn, Mithali Rajagopalan, Hamish Endean, Mathias Jahan and Sammy Fry.
MCBA Technical Officials Program Manager, Lachlan Geron, said the trip was a fantastic development opportunity for the group.
“It was great to see so many of our young referees take the leap into their first tournament. Many started out nervous but quickly overcame that and had a great time, receiving valuable experience, feedback and making some great friends. We’re all looking forward to going again next year!”
For referee Hamish Endean, the weekend highlighted everything that makes tournament officiating so rewarding.
“Going down to referee during the Bendigo tournament allowed me to make new connections and friends with other referees. While on court, I was challenged and pushed myself throughout the weekend. I loved it so much that I want to go back again next year!”
MCBA is incredibly proud of all referees who represented the Association in Bendigo and looks forward to continuing to provide opportunities that support referee development, confidence, and connection within the basketball community.
